Studying Quantum Dots using Atomic Force Microscopy
Studying Quantum Dots using Atomic Force Microscopy
Quantum Dots are semiconductor nanocrystals whose diameter is in the range of 2-10 nm, corre- sponding to 10 to 50 atoms in diameter and a total of 100 to 100,000 atoms within the quantum dot volume. Many types of quantum dot emit light of specific frequencies if electricity or light is applied to them, and these frequencies can be precisely tuned by changing the dots’ size, shape and material, giving rise to many applica- tions. Because of their high tunable properties, quantum dots are of wide interest. It finds its applications in nanotechnology, medical imaging, transistors, solar cells, LED’s, diode lasers, quantum computing, etc. With this project, we intend to further understand and study the properties of quantum dots by using atomic force microscopy.

Measurement of the dynamic viscosity of Canola Oil using a ball drop
Measurement of the dynamic viscosity of Canola Oil using a ball drop
The viscosity of a particular fluid is an interesting parameter that plays an important role in fluid dynamics of that fluid. We chose the common household cooking item canola oil. Using a ball drop, we set out to measure viscosity at various temperatures and create a model for the viscosity of canola oil as a function of temperature, as well as an accurate measurement for viscosity at room temperature. It was found that the viscosity between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius can be approximated using an exponential function and that an estimation for viscosity at room temperature was not very difficult to obtain. The precision of this measurement was limited by uncertainty in lab equipment used to measure various quantities as well as the image analysis software we used and the limited frame-rate of our camera.

Management and Processing of Discographic Data with Amazon Elastic MapReduce
Management and Processing of Discographic Data with Amazon Elastic MapReduce
The purpose of this report is to explain how – by leveraging on the capabilities of the amazon web services – it is possible to manage and process a set of data that is too large and complex for traditional data processing techniques and technologies. The report discusses the implementation of a set of services – from the retrieval of external data to its transformation, through the storage on non relational databases and finally the parallel computation on an external cluster – meant for the management of discographic information in order to easily join different data in an agile manner and subsequently perform additional processing based on the joined output.

Modifying Linux Kernel
Modifying Linux Kernel
In this document we focus on modifying the Linux Kernel through memory and scheduler parameters. The main objective is to study the performance of a computer during the execution of AIO-Stress Benchmark. It was necessary to run the test several times since three of the parameter mentioned in this project were modified 5 times. After completing the test, the results were displayed on graphs, showing that all the variables have a noticeable influence on the performance of the computer.

Entropy Minimization Based Synchronization Algorithm for Underwater Acoustic Receivers
Entropy Minimization Based Synchronization Algorithm for Underwater Acoustic Receivers
This paper presents a new entropy minimization criterion and corresponding algorithms that are used for both symbol timing and carrier frequency recovery for underwater acoustic receivers. It relies on the entropy estimation of the eye diagram and the constellation diagram of the received signal. During the parameter search, when perfect synchronization is achieved, the entropy will reach a global minimum, indicating the least intersymbol interference or a restored constellation diagram. Unlike other synchronization methods, this unified criterion can be used to build an all-in-one synchronizer with high accuracy. The feasibility of this method is proven using a theoretical analysis and supported by sea trial measurement data.

Gliding is an efficient and versatile way to traverse large distances whilst expending as little energy as possible. Work done in the field of biomimetic robotics has demonstrated further benefits to gliding in increasing trajectory control and reducing landing impact loads. A small-scale micro-glider was built to fit a specific design envelope with the objective of maximizing its glide range. A linear dynamics model was used to design and predict the gliding performance of the robot. Once manufactured, it achieved a glide distance of 1.8m and the performance was accurately captured by the dynamics model.

Charge to Mass Ratio of the Electron
Charge to Mass Ratio of the Electron
For an electron moving in a circular path in a magnetic field, if we know the magnetic field strength, accelerating voltage, and radius of the electron's trajectory, then we can make an estimation of the electron's charge to mass ratio. We calculated an average charge to mass ratio of \(2.08 \times 10^{11} \pm 1.81 \times 10^8\) Coulombs per kilogram.
